Kaufmann Office

What links London and Fallingwater? Frank Lloyd Wright’s rare Kaufmann Office, the only interior of his on display outside the USA.

Simon Willison shared his experience walking through the fairly new Victoria and Albert East Storehouse (London, UK), which I found to be interesting. One item stood out to me though: the Kaufmann office. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it is the only fully interior room designed by Wright on display outside of the United States. I hadn’t heard of this office before or seen pictures of it, but I recognized the Kauffman name instantly.

Kauffman was a wealthy retail store owner in Pittsburgh who commissioned Wright to design a family home in western Pennsylvania. That building became to be known as Fallingwater, one of my personal favourites and one of the reasons I have a strong interest in architecture.

I also happened to watch a video on YouTube which showed more of the interior than I could remember seeing. That video informed me that Kauffman’s son donated the building after his father’s death and is open to the public now which is rather interesting to me.

I like it when my personal interests intersect across different sites/media.
